5 Business Lessons from Avon's First Representative

Hey, beauties -- How about some words-of-wisdom to kick off your Monday! I, myself, am in need of a few inspirational words. I found these on Avon's beautyforapurpose.com and I believe they will be most helpful to everyone so, here we go!

Mrs. Persis Foster Eames Albee.
This New Hampshire lady, born in 1836, was known for her style and savvy, which attracted the attention of Avon founder David H. McConnell. He asked her to be the company’s first traveling salesperson, and the rest is history.

Whether you’re working to rise through the corporate ranks or are an entrepreneur about to launch the next great idea, we can all learn a thing (or five) from this one-woman powerhouse.

1. Take a leap of faith.
Call it the original startup. In 1886, Mrs. P.F.E. Albee took a risk and accepted an offer from founder David H. McConnell (then transitioning out of the book business) to work as a door-to-door salesperson for what was then called the California Perfume Company. “Mrs. Albee was one of the most successful General Agents I had in the book work, and it was in her hands I placed the first sample case, or outfit, in the perfume business,” McConnell wrote in 1903. Known for her genteel nature and voracious ambition, Albee traveled by horse-drawn wagon, train, or by foot, offering perfumes to those she encountered — talk about some serious hustle.

2. Have a game plan.
Her determination paid off, and Albee was soon hired to take over the daily operations of perfume sales. Of course, she went full throttle with her mission. Capitalizing on the growing popularity of perfume, she expanded her travels beyond her tiny New Hampshire town to the entire Northeast. Albee developed a business plan in which she recruited women to serve as “depot agents,” selling products in their own neighborhoods. “It is, therefore, only befitting that we give her the honorary title of Mother of the California Perfume Company,” McConnell wrote. The strategy was so successful it became one of the key identifiers of the company that’s still used today.

3. Love what you do.
Imagine this: A confident and in-control Albee wraps up one successful sale, and off she goes up the street to greet the next customer and close the next sale. Albee leaned in to her new gig, and the hard work paid off in all sectors of her life. In a letter to McConnell, she wrote, “I know of no line of work so lucrative, pleasant and satisfactory as this.”

4. Always dress for success.
Talk about power dressing! Much like she lived her life, Albee dressed with no fear, making style statement after statement in ensembles such as lavender taffeta gowns with tiered layers, exaggerated sleeves and look-at-me trains. A seasoned and stylish traveler, she saw no reason to dress down while on the road. In 2015 speak, her outfits went viral when the famously elegant attire later inspired a Mrs. P.F.E. Albee special edition Barbie.

5. Spread the love.
Albee’s enthusiasm was entirely contagious. As Avon’s first traveling saleswoman, she recruited other determined ladies to work for the company. In fact, Albee succeeded in empowering women by incorporating them into the mainstream business world 34 years before women even had the right to vote! One of the company’s first employees, Ann Meany, gave Albee a solid endorsement, writing in her memoirs: “She was about 60 in 1985 and was still making trips, working almost entirely under Mr. McConnell’s direction. She was the daughter of a minister and so sweet and lovely she deserves a whole volume just to herself.Today, Avon Representatives have really placed her on a pedestal – literally. Since 1969, the company has awarded highly coveted 10-inch tall porcelain figurines of Albee to the company’s top sales representatives. And yes, it’s still a Very Big Deal to receive one.

The bottom line:
Albee’s story teaches us that no matter how big or small your dreams may be, go after them. In this age of self-starters, who knows where a little Albee-inspired ambition could take you.

How do I get started?

How to Start Selling AVON | How Selling AVON Works

Hey there, beauties! AVON provides you with all the tools and training {FREE Online Courses via AVON University} you need to be a Successful Avon Representative. In addition, your up-line {this is the person whose reference code you use online} and your district manager are there to support and help you as well. 
When I started my AVON business, I was really looking for something to do for myself. I was a Stay at Home Mom to two great kids. One of whom is in school and the other will be starting school this Fall. One of the first things I thought about when considering a journey with AVON was the discount I would get for selling, so I could get some makeup, fashion, and jewelry products that otherwise I was not purchasing. Sure enough, that is exactly how my business began with quickly transforming into wanting more. AVON has changed me for the better. I am now more focused, driven, confident, and happy. I am now proud to be a Work at Home Mom and love learning and growing with my business every single day!

How much does it cost to start selling AVON?

As one of the oldest and more popular direct sales companies out there, AVON is probably one of the least expensive home businesses to start up. The cost is only $15. Your $15 investment covers the cost of your starter kit which includes 20 AVON brochures, 2 full size products, samples, and training materials.

How much do you make selling AVON?

You can earn money with AVON through sales, online sales, and leadership. To earn a profit on AVON sales through the brochure, you must submit a minimum of $50 in total orders in a campaign. Not only are you selling AVON as an AVON Independent Sales Representative, but you also have the opportunity to sell mark. products which is a brand AVON launched, "geared for" teens/young adults. When you collect money from your customers, you collect the amount for their total order and sales tax. When you submit your customers’ orders to AVON, you are billed for the cost of the products and sales tax. The difference between the amount collected from your customers and what you owe AVON is your profit. The only time you will receive an actual check from AVON is through the leadership program and other bonus incentives.

In order to help you get your business off the ground, AVON gives you an opportunity to earn free AVON products, $100 in cash bonuses, and 100 free samples during your first 5 campaigns as an AVON Representative when you submit orders of $100 or more through the Hit $100 Challenge incentive.

$150 – $294.99: 30%
$295 – $439.99: 35%

When Selling AVON Online, your customers can have their order shipped directly to their home (direct delivery) You will earn 20% commission on online orders (25% commission for President’s Club members). 

How does Selling AVON Work?

What is an AVON campaign? Each AVON campaign runs for two weeks. There are 26 AVON campaigns in a sales cycle. Based on your zip code, you will be assigned to a district and become part of a mail plan | given an RPS (Representative Processing Schedule) which determines which day of the week your order is due. All new AVON Representatives must submit their AVON orders online or via FAST Talk (Avon’s automated phone system).

Are there any other costs associated with selling AVON? 

Yes, there are a few other costs you need to be aware of with selling AVON. Each campaign that you place an order, you will be charged the One Simple Fee. It starts at $5.95 and covers the cost of shipping & handling. Don’t worry though -- when you collect the .75 cent order processing fee from your customers, it is yours to keep to cover your AVON shipping costs. The only other costs you will be responsible for when selling AVON is buying your own brochures (starting at $6.49 for a pack of 10 and get less expensive the more you buy), samples (optional), and sales tools (AVON branded sales tools like bags – also optional).

Celeb MUA Q&A Share: A Quick Look Behind the Makeup Brush

Q: How did you get started?
A: My friend's father actually opened my eyes to the fact that being a makeup artist could be a lucrative career--he was really impressed with the makeup I did for my friend's prom and he worked in TV so he knew many professional artists. After that, I never had a Plan B. 

Q: Did you have any formal training?
A: I went to a four-year university, but focused on areas of study that would help my makeup career. I double majored in photography and digital media and minored in classical arts and art history. It's definitely made a difference to know things like the way lighting affects skin tone.

Q: How much of being a makeup artist is being an artist?
A: As a makeup artist, I work to enhance a woman's natural features, not completely change them, because I still want her to look like herself and be the best version of herself. So how being an artist plays into it is, its' about choosing the colors and shapes to make that happen. 

Q: What are your makeup essentials?
A: Foundation, blush, and mascara. In a desert-island scenario, definitely mascara.

What AVON Has Done For Me

Before starting my journey and #beautiful story with AVON, I was unsure of myself... doubts in my own self took over. Sure, I had more than enough going on at home with family life and housework - BUT something in ME was missing. Something for me was missing. 

I looked into direct selling companies and of course AVON was high on the list. For starters, its #legit. AVON has been around for almost 130 years.. they clearly are doing something right. Also, AVON has the lowest priced start up kit in the direct selling beauty industry. Only $15. The eStore that is provided to me to have customers shop on and get their orders delivered directly to them, is FREE. Always. The AVON Foundation that supports Breast Cancer Awareness and Domestic Violence Awareness, really means a lot to me. AVON is giving back in such a powerful and emotional way. And the Customer Service? I love it. If I have to call in about an issue or question I have, no matter whom I talk with, it always gets corrected and taken care of. They do not just write you off. You are not just a number to AVON --- you matter. Millions of Representatives have flourished, not only in a monetary value but on a personal level. 

That is where I have found myself. Family and friends have noticed --- I am confident. I am proud of AVON and what I am doing. I am proud of myself. I have my own business! It is fun, rewarding, and is a key part in defining who I am and what I am doing in my life. 

Since starting my own AVON business I am more outspoken. You have to be! The most interesting take on this for me is just how easy and naturally it came about. I have struggled my entire life with anxiety and depression. AVON has launched me out of my own shell and i'm becoming a strong and more #independent woman. 

My hope is to continue to grow with my #business and for those who are struggling with themselves in a way as I was... that they too can find that #AVON can help them.  I truly feel this way. I was happy before AVON but with it, I am more.  You can be, too! It takes less than 10 minutes to get started and the excitement that fills you will just spill on to others!! I've met so many amazingly helpful and friendly people along the way. Every day there is something new and exciting waiting to share with the world. Thank you for allowing me to share this with you.
